Karl Fice Thomson led the staff old and new through a rigorous day of training to improve the practice of all aspects of the Centre’s varied activities.

Newquay Activity Centre strive to be the best at providing the highest quality of service for anyone wishing to partake in any of our numerous waterbased activities.

We have a 100% commitment towards safety and awareness in the environments we work in, ensuring everyone who comes to our centre has the time of their lives and do so in the safest way possible. This is all thanks to our professional instructors and guides that all undergo our continuous staff training and also hold a wealth of personal experience.

Newquay Activity Centre work closely with local emergency service organisations including the RNLI and Westcountry ambulance services to ensure best practice.

The staff used practical display and debate to agree the best approach to many potentially hazardous situations.

This training session consisted or the following elements.

• Instructor codes of conduct
• expectations of an Instructor
• Risk assessments
• Emergency action plans
• Normal operations procedures
• Equipment Itineary/checks and correct storage of
• Inccident/accident Practical role play senarios
• Basic coasteer training (land and water based)

Apart from a surprise encounter with one of the local grey seals in one of the smugglers caves everything ran very smoothly!

As you can see the weather wasn’t that great (it was just before the amazing spell of sun and fantastic surf at the end of March).

The crew got stuck in to the adventure and some even admit that our top school group coach Karl Fice-Thomson taught them a thing or two about the local environment. The jumps were a thrill as ever, but not quite everyone took the plunge on the biggest ones.

Group organiser John ‘Hodgey’ Hodge looked quite a site in his light pink helmet and ‘snugg fitting’ wetsuit. When it came to the jumps, we all agreed it’s the quietest he’s ever been!

We’d like to say a big thanks for coming a long, we’re also grateful for the awesome feedback about the experience and we look forward to seeing you with your pupils nearer the summer.

The gang loved every minute of it. The highlight was when the biggest mouth in the group and organiser Lachlan decided he didn’t want to take the challenge of the three biggest jumps. Will he ever live it down? Ha ha. The guys stayed at Berties Lodge and enjoyed Newquay’s nightlife. This is what they had to say:
